Artfineline Announces SKIN and Under
A photographic book by Igor Mattio
New York, NY — Artfineline is pleased to announce the publication of SKIN and Under, a new photography book by Italian-born, New York–based artist Igor Mattio. The book brings together a sustained body of work produced over several years across Colombia, Italy, and France, and marks the first volume in a broader cycle of projects examining masculinity, vulnerability, and the construction of identity.
Composed primarily of black-and-white images, SKIN and Under focuses on young adult men photographed in moments of physical and emotional exposure. Stripped of narrative staging and cultural signifiers, the figures are presented in states of quiet tension, intimacy, and suspended gesture. Rather than documenting social roles or environments, the work centers on the body as a site of contradiction—between strength and fragility, performance and retreat, desire and restraint.
Mattio’s approach resists spectacle and overt eroticism. The images unfold through closeness and duration, privileging trust, encounter, and the slow negotiation between photographer and subject. Across interiors, anonymous landscapes, and transitional spaces, the book constructs a visual language that questions inherited models of masculinity while remaining attentive to form, composition, and the physical presence of the photographed body.
Published by Artfineline, SKIN and Under is conceived as a long-form work rather than a survey. The book reflects an editorial commitment to photographic projects that develop over time and that favor depth, coherence, and formal rigor over immediacy.
