Herbert List

Herbert List (1903–1975) was a German photographer renowned for his striking black-and-white images that often blended elements of surrealism and classicism. Born in Hamburg, List initially pursued a career in the coffee business but soon gravitated towards photography in the 1930s. His work reflects a deep engagement with Mediterranean culture, ancient ruins, and classical themes, as well as a fascination with the male form, which has cemented him as a leading figure in homoerotic photography. List’s images, often enigmatic and poetic, also display a powerful aesthetic tension, capturing moments of stillness that evoke both a timeless beauty and a lingering mystery. His association with Magnum Photos and work for publications like Vogue further solidified his status as one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
